Effects of Media Annemarie Holbrook

The news has received a reputation of having the power to do harm. False news stories circulate the tabloids, affecting many people. The one’s most affected by false news are celebrities. Reporters have pried into the lives of celebrities to try and get every inside scoop they can, and many times, this leads to false reporting. Imagine your face plastered on magazine stands on the street, in the stores, and circulating the Internet. The entire world has access to your personal life. This is bad enough when people all over the country, and even the world, think they know your entire life. What makes it worse is when all this news is FALSE.
A visual rhetoric I am choosing to use is magazine covers such as this. Pictured below is a magazine with the face of Khloe Kardashian plastered on the front stating “Betrayed by their men. Cheating Scandals. Khloe kicks Lamar out—he’s living in a hotel!” A circulating rumor as of late is that Lamar Odum cheated on Khloe Kardashian. I saw the news and immediately questioned this. Months later this was addressed on the show “Keeping up with the Kardashians” where all was revealed to be untrue.
Another rumor clouding over Khloe Kardashian that put her into the spotlight was that Khloe was not a Kardashian. Someone decided to make an assumption that Khloe does not have the same biological father as her sisters and brother. I watched episodes that addressed this rumor, and saw the effects of it on Khloe. News like this hurts and is very personal. The rumor not only hurt Khloe, but also her mom Kris. Once again the rumor was shut down.
When false news like this gets out and is put into writing, it seems to become real. People tend to think that because it is printed in magazines that it must be true. However, that is not the case, and does not make it a credible source.
