Tomko, Colleen F. “Mixed
Messages.” Cartoon. 2003. Kids Together, Inc. Web.
I chose this cartoon as a rhetorical source for my visual argument assignment because it accurately portrays how the school system works in today’s society. This cartoon relates to my topic, as it shows how regular education classrooms and special education classrooms are currently separated from one another. Furthermore, this cartoon shows how society tries to cover this up or ignore the fact that special education students do not receive an education equal to those of general or regular education students. The cartoon contains a very contradictory message of “celebrating diversity” and “welcoming everyone” but having special education students come in through a different entrance, as well as providing handicap access in the back of the school. This source really backs up the argument that I am trying to make in my research paper, which is that inclusion should be implemented in all schools for the benefit of both regular education and special education students. By putting inclusion into practice, schools will no longer be displaying these conflicting messages because special education students will truly be welcomed in all ways throughout the education system, and this will provide a more meaningful learning experience for all who are involved. This cartoon affects the way that I think about my topic in that it helps me in being able to support my side of the argument. There are both social and cultural implications located in this cartoon because socially and culturally this cartoon shows the opinion that the majority of society has regarding the education the special needs students. In all, this cartoon provides a clever but meaningful message on how today’s society tries to look away from the flaws in the education system when it comes to making an equal education available for every student, regardless of whether or not they are a regular education student or special education student.
